The Faces Project is a non-profit organization 501 (c) 3 on a mission.   Its mission is to increase awareness to the too often ignored fact that African American Men in Washington Area are dying from Prostate Cancer at a rate higher than white men living in the city and higher than all men (of all races) nationally. DC has the second highest prostate cancer rate in the world, second to Nairobi, Kenya

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death, for all men, in the United States. Afro-American men are twice as likely to develop the disease and die, in a lifetime, 1 in 3. This is particularly true for Black men indigenous to the District of Columbia where the life expectancy is 68, far below the national life expectancy, 76, for all men.

The Good news is Prostate Cancer is 95 percent treatable, if detected early (before it spreads).  However, too many men wait and delay seeking medical advice until long after the symptoms have become apparent and even painful. Many men avoid a simple and effective screening, called the PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen).  This should be followed by a DRE (Digital Rectal Exam) when available.

Tragically, a greater percentage of Afro-American men continue to be diagnosised as "late stage", limiting the options for successful treatment. The Faces Project is on a mission to change this behavior, and this condition, with information, education, advocacy and free screening.
